POLL- Will the new elections in Iraq lead to peace?

Today, the people of Iraq voted to establish a permanent democratic government. Many speculate (the media, of course) that this is a step toward US troop reduction in Iraq. Is it? In speaking with a co-worker that is in the Army Reserves, he feel that the United States will not be able to reduce its troops and declare a victory until it can get a stable police force and army that will uphold the laws being established in Iraq.

What do you think?

Part 1. I would be slow to call the recent Iraqi elected either "simple" or "so-called democratic." Iraqi had over a 70% turnout rate even under threats of death from insurgents. The U.S. typically has less than 50% turnout, who is more democratic? I think peace will come because the Iraqi people want peace and they despeartely want the freedom that democracy and capitalism brings as evidence by the turnout. The Iraqi people were unable to bring about change on their own because of S.Hussein. The U.S. was different in that we were a free society when we went to war as oppossed to a dictatorship. If the mission in Iraq is successful I believe that other nations in the Mid East will also want what they have.

Part 2. The leaders in the Mid East have held a monopoly on the information and the power. Now with alternative information sources, internet, the people are no longer dependent upon the government for their information and are deciding for themselves what they want as opposed to being told. I think that the younger generations will bring about change especially if they see that freedom works and if it works in Iraq.

Part 3. We should be praying that it does work as the eyes of our enemies are watching. If we fail in Iraq then our enenmies will be emboldened against us and our credibility with our allies will be shaken. Will Iraq ever achieve "peace"? Not apart from Christ. I firmly believe that the U.S. has been so blessed because of our strong foundings/foundation on Christ and God's word. The Iraqi people may be free from tyranny, they may eventually have a free market, but they will never had real peace until they meet the Prince of Peace and He resides in their hearts.
